Senators Urge HHS to Expand Coverage for OTC Contraceptives

Many birth control pills are covered but require a prescription.

Forty-eight senators wrote a letter to President Biden’s administration this week, advocating for healthcare to expand coverage to include over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pills. The senators commended recent decisions made by the administration to make family planning more affordable and accessible but informed the Departments of the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services that rescinding prescription requirements for OTC contraceptives would expand access even more.

The senators wrote, “The FDA’s approval of Opill is a milestone; however, for an OTC birth control pill to meet its potential and be truly accessible, federal departments must ensure that it is covered without cost-sharing and without the need for a prescription as a condition of coverage.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of Congress as they seek to expand coverage for contraception.
  • For secretaries in the departments contacted by legislators to be prudent in their responses to the request.
  • For FDA officials as they review and test medications and therapies for authorization.
